Train operators join forces to spearhead innovation

Future Labs Rail innovation

Four UK rail operators are joining forces to launch an ambitious innovation programme, Future Labs. LNER, Northern, Southeastern and Transpennine Express will be aiming to drive innovation across multiple areas including customer experience, performance, and operations.

Future Labs will provide technology providers the opportunity to demonstrate possible solutions in real-world environments over a 12-week period. This will include access to mentors and experts within the four train-operating companies.

The programme will see Innovation leads at the four train operators lead the programme; Ross Welham (LNER), Christine Lefroy-Owen (Northern), Daniel Taylor (Southeastern) and Colin Kelly (TransPennine Express) will jointly lead along with Network Rail.

They will be assisted by the corporate innovation experts, L Mark, who will support the candidates throughout the 12-week programme.

LNER’s chief digital and innovation officer, Danny Gonzalez said: “Through the collaboration of the four rail operators, we are taking the next necessary step towards embracing new technologies.

“Some of the greatest leaps forward in the rail sector have come through this open approach to innovation, and this new programme marks a significant moment in generating strength of expertise and access for technology companies looking to break into the industry.”

Applications are open until 16 June 2024 and any applicant is being asked to respond to 3 industry-lead challenges. These include performance and operational excellence, developing people and talent and customer experience enhancement.

Daniel Saunders, chief executive at L Marks, added: “We’re delighted to announce our new partnership with the train operating companies to launch Future Labs. The programme is set to be unrivalled in terms of the depth of access, data, insight, and mentorship.”
