Mainline train runs under in-cab signalling in UK first

A digitally signalled train has successfully run on an intercity mainline route for the first time in the UK.

The run happened in the early hours of Sunday June 2 as a Great Northern 717 ran a test on the East Coast Main Line (ECML) between Welwyn Garden City and Hitchin, Hertfordshire, using European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2, which sends signalling information direct to a computer screen in the driver’s cab.

ETCS is to be rolled out across the ECML under the £1.4 billion East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP). This test was part of an ongoing process ensuring that the trains, which have already been fitted with the necessary on-board technology, will work with the digital signalling system.

The testing process is expected to continue through to 2025 with passenger and freight signalling operations starting soon after.

ECDP Train Control Partner Siemens Mobility is overseeing the testing process, working with the relevant train operating partners (initially Govia Thameslink Railway as the first train to be dynamically tested).

Oliver Turner, Head of ERTMS at Govia Thameslink Railway, which operates Great Northern, said: “We’re proud our Class 717 train and ERTMS team were instrumental to this landmark use of digital signalling on the East Coast Main Line”.

ETCS testing on the main line follows on from its successful introduction on the Northern City Line in London last year. Services began using the technology on the Finsbury Park to Moorgate section of the line.
