North Yorkshire Moors Railway to convert coal locomotive

NYMR engineer prepares for the day. CHARLOTTE GRAHAM.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is set to make history by converting its iconic USATC 2253 “Omaha” locomotive from coal to oil. This groundbreaking project will be the first of its kind in the UK since the end of steam.

The conversion is a vital step in securing the future of the country’s busiest heritage railway, as rising coal prices and environmental concerns have posed significant challenges. By switching to oil, the NYMR aims to reduce emissions and ensure the continued operation of its steam trains.
