Edinburgh Tram workers back strike action

Edinburgh tram workers are set to strike over concerns about late running times which are preventing them from taking essential breaks.

Unite the Union has confirmed that over 90% of its members at Edinburgh Trams voted in favour of industrial action. The union claims that a shortfall in running times between Edinburgh Airport and Newhaven is leading to drivers and other staff working up to five hours without breaks.

Sharon Graham, Unite’s general secretary, said: “Our members are facing an unacceptable health and safety crisis. They shouldn’t have to choose between doing their job and basic human needs.”

Lyn Turner, Unite industrial officer, added: “Edinburgh’s tram workers are being forced into taking strike action.”

“This is mismanagement plain and simple, and it is having unacceptable consequences for our members.” Unite wants to resolve this through negotiation but we are running out of track before strike action takes place. If this happens, then Edinburgh Trams will be solely to blame for any disruption. Management has one more chance.”

The union believes the new tram timetable and delays to a new signalling system have exacerbated the problem. Unite warns that strike action could cause significant disruption to the city’s tram network.

“While we are disappointed the union has embarked on a course of action that threatens disruption for customers, we are committed to the wellbeing of colleagues and are doing everything we can to address their concerns.

A spokesman for Edinburgh Trams commented: “As part of this process, we are working closely with the Trams to Newhaven project team, City of Edinburgh Council and colleagues to find a workable solution, including improving the effectiveness of road traffic signals that can have an impact on our timetable and turnaround times at the airport and Newhaven.”
