People get stuck in brand new station lift on two occasions within nine days of opening

Newtown station. NETWORK RAIL.

People have been trapped inside a station lift twice within the first nine days of it opening.

After the lifts at Newtown in Mid Wales entered service on April 1, a woman and her two-year-old daughter had to be rescued by firefighters that afternoon after the doors refused to open.

In a video posted to YouTube, firefighters were seen releasing the doors so the pair could get out and onto Platform 2.

Eight days later, on April 9, two people in their 80s also became stuck in the lift.

Work to install the brand new lifts had been ongoing since December 2023, before their opening on April 1 as part of the Department for Transport’s Access for All scheme.

A Network Rail spokeswoman said: “Lifts often go through a settling in period while first in use and following an issue with the lift an investigation showed minor damage to the lift door.

“We are continuing to run some final tests and then the lift will be able to reopen to the public once complete.”
