Network Rail will invest £11.5 million to refurbish and replace critical infrastructure on the Far North Line, aiming to boost long-term reliability on one of Scotland’s most remote rail routes.
The works include refurbishing a 5-mile stretch of track between Brora and Helmsdale, and replacing nearly 9 miles between Invergordon and Fearn. To carry out the project safely, no trains will run north of Dingwall from 8 June to 30 June.
During this period, ScotRail will operate a replacement bus service between Inverness and Wick/Thurso, with trains continuing to run between Inverness and Dingwall, and services to Kyle of Lochalsh remaining unaffected.
“While this work will mean some temporary disruption, it’s a vital investment in the future of the route,” said Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director. “We’ll have alternative travel arrangements in place and appreciate our customers’ patience.”
Ross Moran, Network Rail Scotland Route Director, added: “This essential investment will breathe new life into one of Scotland’s most scenic and historic routes. By replacing and refurbishing infrastructure - some of it nearly a century old - we’ll help provide safer, smoother, and more reliable journeys.
"We fully appreciate that closing the line will cause some disruption, and we’re grateful for the patience and understanding of passengers and local communities as we carry out this important project.”
Dalchalm level crossing just north of Brora will also be closed during the works, with traffic diverted via the A9.
Passengers are advised to check their travel plans in advance on the ScotRail website or app.
