Spending Review: Government commits more money to rail projects but subsidy set to fall

The Government has committed more money to major rail projects such as Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) and East West Rail, although day-to-day funding for the Department for Transport (DfT) is set to fall in real terms over the next five years.

    With this Government throwing another 23 billion on HS2, would it not make scene to complete the whole project?

    The majority to the North (as expected) - purely politically motivated to ensure retention of seats. Nothing of note for the South West - the West of England Line will continue to struggle on with inadequate, life expired infrastructure, and no sign of further GWR electrification.
