£869 million train deal for Anglia

Angel Trains will finance 665 new Aventra vehicles for the Greater Anglia franchise, in an £869 million deal.

The order was confirmed on September 30, and forms part of the GA franchise awarded to Abellio on August 10 (RAIL 807).

The new trains will be delivered between January 2019 and September 2020. Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) will partner with the rolling stock leasing company to fund the trains.

Bombardier will build 22 ten-car electric multiple units and 89 five-car EMUs at its Derby Litchurch Lane facility, while the manufacturer has also signed a separate deal to provide ongoing maintenance services support for the trains. This will run for seven years and is valued at £83m.

Well change is on the way for Eastern England. New trains means better services and less overcrowding and more improvements to our railway across East of England. Not just East Anglia but also Norwich, Ipswich, Colchester, Chelmsford, Peterborough, Cambridge, Stansted Airport and London will see new trains plus London will be getting new trains for TfL London Overground (Class 710) and TfL Rail/MTR Crossrail Elizabeth Line (Class 345). Cambridge will also see new trains in service and Govia Thameslink Railway to be extended to Peterborough, Cambridge and King's Linn in 2018 which will provide new services to Brighton and Southern England with new Class 700 trains still be delivered.

“We need them for a massive timetable change in May 2019, so we needed a proven platform and we couldn’t afford to wait.” Quote Jamie Burles Abellio MD. Your not going to have enough new units ready for much of a change are you. January - May 2019 including driver training.
