A glut of EMUs was ordered in the late 2010s, so the result is mid-life EMU kit going for scrap while TOCs scramble around for DMUs, and aged 15x and 16x units remain well-utilised.

While politicians and some industry leaders keep clinging onto the 'discontinuous electrification' bandwagon, this is inevitable. Short-termism and efficient railway asset management don't mix.
