Four three-car Class 170s will move to Southern next summer to provide extra capacity on the Uckfield-London Bridge line.
They will be cascaded from ScotRail when that franchise ends in March 2015. Eversholt owns the trains, and nine will be sent off-lease by SR, although five will immediately return to Scotland under Abellio.
Southern has been unable to lengthen trains on this busy route because no additional diesel trains have been available to lease. Now that Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) has secured these extra trains, it will be possible to lengthen more services to their current maximum length of eight carriages, once the new trains have been brought in and overhauled. GTR takes over the Southern franchise in July.
