Fares would reduce under public ownership - Action for Rail

“Season tickets could be 10% cheaper by 2017 if rail services were run by the public sector,” according to a report by campaign group Action for Rail.

The report, based on research carried out by Transport for Quality of Life, says £1.5 billion could be saved over the next five years if routes such as Northern, TransPennine and the West Coast Main Line were operated by the public sector,

Included in that figure, it estimates that £520 million in shareholder dividends would be saved if the 11 franchises that come up for renewal between 2015 and 2020 were run by the public sector.

The study says that the following benefits could be possible:

  • Before the end of the year, it would be possible to introduce free off-peak travel for children travelling with their parents.
  • From 2017 regulated fares (including season tickets and anytime day tickets) could be cut by 10%.
  • From 2020 all fares could be cut by 3%.
