Aggregates trains operated by GB Railfreight are running between Whatley Quarry (Somerset) and Wellingborough Rail Yard as part of a rolling 12-month contract.
The first train ran on January 26, hauled by 66705. It left Whatley at 1639, arriving at 2343. On average there will be one train per week, using one Class 66/7 and 22 JNA wagons.
This is the first time GBRf has served the Mendips. The freight company says it also offers security to the Wellingborough site for wider freight use, with a ten-year deal with London Underground due to end next year.
Given the market challenges rail freight currently faces, it is also an important development for GB Railfreight and the wider industry.
“Aggregates provides a key source of growth for the industry, as we support the British construction sector in its drive to build new homes and infrastructure,” said GBRf Managing Director John Smith.
“This contract with Hanson UK is the first time we have worked together.”
