Metrolink parking trial passes the test

Overnight parking at weekends will be introduced at 15 Manchester Metrolink tram stops, following a successful trial.

A Transport for Greater Manchester meeting on June 10 heard that no capacity problems had been caused by the scheme that allows passengers to leave their cars at the stop’s car park until noon the next day.

TfGM said that a survey carried out during the trial found 85% of passengers in favour of the scheme. Now a permanent scheme will be introduced offering more than 2,500 overnight parking spaces on Friday and Saturday nights. This is 77% of spaces available at all 22 Metrolink car parks.

TfGM said that overnight parking during the week will not be introduced, due to major events such as concerts and football matches that would affect the following morning’s car park capacity.

The current trial was launched in December and finishes on July 31, after which any permanent scheme is expected to come into effect.

What about plans for future extensions for Manchester Metrolink including the extensions to Salford Docks and other areas in the Greater Manchester area.
