Northern’s truncated services from Leeds to Carlisle have been running further north to Armathwaite since June 27.
Trains had been terminating at Appleby since a large landslip at Eden Brows severed the Settle-Carlisle Line on February 9 (RAIL 795).
Despite being over 20 miles south of Armathwaite and Eden Brows, Appleby had been deemed the most suitable place to terminate rail services owing to the provision of welfare facilities including a heated waiting room.
At Armathwaite, passengers must connect with rail replacement bus services for onward travel to Carlisle. Only one platform (northbound) will be in use for trains running in both directions at stations north of Appleby.
The landslip is not due to be fully repaired until early 2017.

This means 126 glorious miles are OPEN between Leeds and Armathwaite (the last station before Carlisle) and just 8 miles immediately south of Carlisle remain closed. The scenery is FREE and Northern have introduced their S&C Day Rover ticket - just £15 Leeds-Carlisle and return. £9.50 with a Railcard. Surely a bargain.
