South Western Railway has announced that, subject to a final round of safety tests, the Island Line will reopen on November 1 with new trains and upgraded stations and infrastructure.
The operator says the trains’ new interiors will provide a better passenger experience, boosted by the inclusion of new plug sockets, free WiFi and wheelchair spaces. Accessibility has also been improved by raising platforms or lowering tracks at five stations, to reduce the step height between the train and the platform.
Tracks have also been improved to provide a smoother ride, by trimming, rejointing and adjusting the rails on more than 6½miles of the line.
New sleepers and rails have been installed at various locations between Shanklin and Ryde St Johns, while new electricity cables, a better power supply and new signalling cables have also been introduced.
