The Rail Accident Investigation Branch has commenced a formal investigation into the derailment of a freight train at Kisby user-worked crossing in Cambridgeshire on August 19.
The derailment occurred when an eastbound GB Railfreight Class 66, hauling 36 container wagons, struck a loaded farm trailer that had been crossing the Peterborough-March line at approximately 0900.
The train driver made an emergency brake application around six seconds before the collision, but the train was still travelling at an estimated 58mph.
As a result, the trailer was dragged along by the train, forcing the leading axle of the locomotive and an unladen wagon in the middle of the train to derail for a distance of 780 metres before the train came to a stop.
