Info sought after vandals throw log

Northern and Network Rail are appealing for information after a group of vandals threw a log into the path of an oncoming train near Bolton.

The incident, which happened on the Manchester side of Farnworth Tunnel at just before 1830 on March 14, resulted in a smashed window and a brief fire on board a service travelling from Blackpool North to Hazel Grove.

Fortunately, no one was hurt, and more than 100 passengers were safely evacuated before the train was removed so that overnight repairs could take place to damaged overhead line equipment.
