DfT approves new Cambridge South station

Plans to build a new station at Cambridge South have been given the green light by the Department for Transport.

A Transport & Works Act Order (TWAO) has been granted for the £183.6 million scheme to construct a two-storey, four-platform station adjacent to Cambridge Biomedical Campus.

Approval has also been given to replace two level crossings and to make improvements to Shepreth Junction and the southern approach to Cambridge station.

It is predicted that Cambridge South will be used by two million passengers a year. It will be served by trains running to London, Stansted Airport, Ely and Birmingham, as well as (in the future) to Oxford and Bedford using East West Rail.

Construction is due to begin once final designs have been approved by the local planning authority.
