LNER plans to boost Sunday services for Leeds to half-hourly, Managing Director David Horne told RAIL on May 15.
The West Yorkshire station currently has hourly services to and from London, but the operator is seeing more demand now for travel (particularly at weekends) than before the pandemic struck in March 2020.
Horne, who said the proposal was with the Department for Transport for consideration, admitted it would bring higher costs for the operator, but said it would boost income further. He added that it would relieve overcrowding on Anglo-Scottish services by taking more of the passenger load from stations south of Doncaster.
He was speaking to RAIL as LNER named 801228 Century to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the original LNER (the London and North Eastern Railway) in 1923. Graphics around the name (which is applied to the First Class driving and kitchen car) celebrate the history of the old LNER and subsequent services along the East Coast Main Line.
