UK-based component suppliers are being urged to bid for a share of the work to complete the £2 billion HS2 train fleet being built by the Hitachi/Alstom joint venture at Derby, Newton Aycliffe and Crewe.
Two years after they won their contract, the train builders are preparing to issue tenders to fit out the 54 new train sets. They are keen to attract companies not yet in the rail sector, such as building construction, the motor industry, and aviation.
“These contracts present a real opportunity for growth over the next five years, and we want to see more UK businesses thrive as a result of HS2’s construction,” said HS2 Chief Commercial
Officer Ruth Todd. HS2 is holding a ‘Meet the Contractor’ event at the Midland Hotel in Manchester on July 11. It is looking for companies that specialise in body fabrications, interior assemblies, exterior coatings, walls and ceilings, insulation, pipework, emergency equipment, high-voltage cables, electrical cubicles and decals.

Whoever makes the seats, can they PLEASE make them more comfortable than those in the GWR class 800, which seem the be made from some hybrid of diamond and silicon carbide with a granite bar right across the middle of where your arse naturally rests. It can't be too much to ask to make a seat actually usable?
