Further evaluation is needed of the aggregates markets across London, to assess where new or expanded aggregate freight terminals are warranted.
This is according to GB Railfreight, which in its submission to the Mayor of London’s consultation on the London Infrastructure Plan 2050 says it “supports the development of existing strategically effective aggregates terminals across London, as well as the creation of new terminals, in order to deal with actual and prospective growing demand”.
However, the freight operator does not believe that intermodal sites should be constructed in the city, because of their size.
It says: “Despite being intermodal terminals, both Stratford and Willesden freight terminals are prime examples of speculative builds subsequently closed, that suffered significant losses because, along with delay risks and road congestion costs, they had a limited market to drive business.”
