Morgan Sindall Infrastructure has been awarded a £28 million contract to build the new rockfall shelter on the sea wall at Holcombe, between Teignmouth and Dawlish.
Work on the 209-metre structure north of Parsons Tunnel is planned to start this August and is expected to take a year to complete (RAIL 931).
It will be constructed from a series of six-metre modular pre-cast concrete sections. Preparatory work at the top of the cliffs overlooking the railway began in March.
As part of the deal, Network Rail has confirmed that the money will be spent locally. This includes creating new jobs and apprenticeships, plus a close relationship with the local supply chain.
NR believes that the deal will generate £10m in long-term opportunities for the area and build on the £10m expected to be spent with local businesses during construction of the second phase of the new sea wall at Dawlish.
