National Rail Awards 2018: STATION OF THE YEAR (LARGE) Winner: Ipswich – Greater Anglia

This station is a winner because it has been transformed in recent years into what judges describe as an impressive county railhead. Ipswich has been well modernised and includes an excellent transport interchange, together with generous bicycle and car parking facilities. The complex rail interchanges between five routes are handled well by the station’s proactive staff and good information.

Situated in Suffolk, on the Great Eastern Main Line, the station serves approximately 3.3 million passengers per year.

Ipswich station was opened on its current site in 1860, following relocation from its 1846 site and original name - Ipswich Stoke Hill. The station is just to the north of Stoke Tunnel, which was constructed as part of the Ipswich to Ely Line.

The station also has a number of goods facilities with private sidings and extensive railways in the docks.

Is this a piss take? Clearly those judging have never been there at 7pm when all the commuters get home! There's nowhere near enough parking for pick-up/drop off. The roads get gridlocked from every direction. Oh but there's loads of room for the buses and taxis (which nobody uses). Yet another cluster-fuck into the mixer that is the nightmare traffic around town! Rant over!

🤔 hmm interesting post. Clearly not impressed with the remotely expressed view.

As someone who has just moved to Ipswich I can't tell you what a pleasant surprise the station has been compared to my old one in W. london. Clean smart, spacious, lots of staff, easy pick up and drop off, lots of buses, list goes on. Grass is greener in Ipswich. IO f you wnat soemtihing to complain of try Staines.
