A £250,000 refurbishment has been completed at Shrewsbury’s 117-year-old Severn Bridge Junction signal box, the largest remaining in the world with 180 levers, to keep it fit to manage rail traffic over five cross-country routes.
Beginning last October, repairs were carried out by Network Rail and contractor MPH Construction. Extra funding from the Railway Heritage Trust has allowed the entire three-storey building to be weather-proofed. A significant change is the replacement of the original single-glazed windows with new double-glazed units.
Other improvements include new timber cladding, boarding on the external walkway below the windows, and a full external repaint. There is still work outstanding on the interior.
