Spanish manufacturer Talgo has confirmed it has set up a British business: Talgo UK. The head office will be in Chesterfield, with Jon Veitch appointed as UK Managing Director.
The company also plans to build a factory at Longannet (in Fife), to build trains for both this country and abroad. Talgo is currently bidding for the £2.75 billion HS2 classic-compatible train contract, as well as other fleets.
Key to Talgo UK plans will be a ‘knowledge transfer’ that will be used to build domestic capacity for Research and Development in this country. This is also planned to be at Chesterfield, and will act as the focal point for the company’s R&D.
The company also welcomed TSSA General Secretary Manuel Cortes to its Las Matas headquarters near Madrid on October 10, to discuss recognition arrangements for Talgo.
Cortes said: “It’s clear that they have a strong plan to build a factory in Longannet and a research and design centre in Derbyshire. This will create over 1,200 directly employed jobs with thousands more in the supply chain.
“By having a research and design facility in north Derbyshire, we will once again build trains from scratch on our shores.”
