Editor David Fowler encourages readers to remember that support for Crossrail 2 and HS3 in the recent Budget is positive but both projects are still at an early stage. He asks how committed a future chancellor will be to them. Assuming they go ahead, Fowler also questions the available resources to complete all the projects that will be underway at the same time: “Construction of High Speed 2 would follow seamlessly from the end of Crossrail…Construction of Crossrail 2 would roughly coincide with phase two of HS2. High Speed 3…will coincide in part with HS2 phase one”. With the constant pressure on rail’s skills base, it’s a definite concern that must be considered.
