A number of Conservative MPs have called on the Government to excuse commuters suffering the worst service delays from January's fare rise.
Regulated fares will go up by 1.9% based on July's retail price index inflation rate, pushing up the average annual season ticket by £52.
The calls were backed by Transport Focus, but a DfT statement said that wages were growing faster than 1.9% per year while capping fares in line with inflation will save commuters £425 in the five years to 2020.
