EWR moves wiring infrastructure
The East West Rail Alliance (comprising Network Rail, Atkins, Laing O’Rourke and VolkerRail) has completed its first electrification project, despite the scheme to restore the former Varsity Line having been descoped to no longer include the installation of overhead line equipment.
Over Easter, workers rewired some 350 metres of the West Coast Main Line beneath Bletchley Viaduct, to enable the flyover deck spans to be lifted by the EWR Alliance in due course. The existing structure needs to be strengthened with stainless steel and carbon bearings plus crossbeams before being pressed into service for EWR.
