Intercity rail rivalry will mean ‘improved service’

The Government is considering introducing more train operators to main line services. This follows recommendations from the Competition and Markets Authority to run two or more operators on the East Coast, West Coast and Great Western Main Line. If implemented, franchise holders would pay higher track access charges, which would allow for the government to reduce rail fares. It would also encourage more open access operators, who pay lower track access levies than franchise holders.
