Nick Richardson says that increasing competition between train operators is more complicated than it sounds and asks whether passengers would in fact benefit. His view is that “operators alongside each other for a common good rather than chasing each other in an attempt to satisfy a nebulous concept”. He believes that wasting resources on more restructuring is a distraction when the aim should be to consolidate and expand. “The potential should be for passenger transport to take a greater market share and provide an alternative to car use rather than internal squabbling.
