Japan’s bullet train operator is on fast track to run British railways

East Japan Railway Company (JR East) has put in a joint bid with Abellio and Mitsui for the West Midlands rail franchise. With over half of the applications from overseas railway companies, some have perceived this as an attempted foreign takeover of Britain’s railways. JR East commented that their ‘considerable expertise’ in track infrastructure would provide a substantial boost to the British rail network.
