Plans for a new 336km high speed line between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore are "firming up" says RGI. An original opening date of 2020 is now considered unrealistic but the Malaysian Government approved the scheme in April. It says the corridor between the two cities supported just under 5.5m trips by all modes in 2005 and that this increased to 7.45m in 2011. HSR offers further growth if the current travelling time of 6hrs 40min by conventional metre gauge train to just 90min. Another proposal attracting international interest is an Indonesian high speed railway from Kakarta to Bandung.
