The government of the Australian state of Victoria has unveiled plans to power Melbourne’s tram network from electricity supplied exclusively by large scale solar farms.
An open tender will be launched in the first half of this year to build solar farms with a combined capacity of 75MW by the end of 2018.
It is estimated that the initiative will reduce the state’s annual greenhouse gas emissions by 80,000 tonnes and keep it on track to meets its ambitious target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
