NIC urges devolved transport investment
National Infrastructure Commission Chief Executive Phil Graham has urged the DfT to include new long-term funding streams for English urban areas in this year’s Comprehensive Spending Review.
He told delegates at the UK Infrastructure Show in Birmingham that compared with London, where transport powers have already been devolved, UK cities suffer from a “fragmented and piecemeal system of funding programmes and grants” .
Graham paid tribute to the Transforming Cities Fund for improving matters, but said it was still a short-term solution when five-year funding settlements and specific budgets for cities would be a better response to the challenge faced by urban areas.
