Siemens and ViP expand autonomous light rail trials
The autonomous tram trial in Potsdam, Germany, which began in 2018, has been extended from a 6km (3.8-mile) section of line in the city’s southern suburbs to a longer 13km route. The extended route includes an 800-metre section which is shared by buses, enabling a wider range of scenarios to be tested.
So far, the converted Combino tram has operated without incident, but will now be developed to enhance its ability to predict what vehicles in front might do, including sudden braking.
The tram will continue to be manned by an experienced driver who can intervene if necessary, as German laws do not permit unattended operation in public areas.
