Siemens Mobility CEO William Wilson has confirmed that the company is looking closely at opportunities for new rolling stock contracts in the UK, as work continues on its new Goole factory.
This facility will be producing new Piccadilly Line trains for London Underground, with the first due to be completed in 2024.
However, Wilson said that Goole can’t be reliant on Transport for London for the rest of the plant’s future, as orders for new Bakerloo, Central and Waterloo & City Line trains may be some way off, owing to TfL’s current financial restraints.
Siemens is preparing to launch its new Verve platform (a 23-metre, 100mph EMU or battery EMU), in anticipation of a Scottish tender that is due this autumn for a large new fleet to operate suburban services on the Fife, Borders and East Kilbride/Barrhead routes and in and around Glasgow.
