Political support for enlarging Spain’s high-speed rail network remains high, despite the country’s struggling economy and public pledge to control its budget deficit. All leading candidates in Spain’s December 2015 general election committed to continue investing in the AVE network and a further 300km is due to open throughout 2016. A low-cost approach is being taken in the final stages of construction in all projects, and they will initially be single-track only.
