Northern Rail faces a “ticking timebomb” of high numbers of staff approaching retirement age, compounded by underinvestment in developing a younger workforce, according to Managing Director Alex Hynes. Speaking at a meeting of the Railway Study Association in early Janaury, Hynes described the operator’s investment in fewer than ten engineering apprentices year as “tiny”, whereas utility companies with similar demographics had recruited hundreds of apprentices.
