Jonathan Bray, director of the Urban Transport Group, looks at how an integrated national public transport network has been developed in the Netherlands, and at the lessons that the UK can learn.
He notes how the Dutch have embraced franchising, for reasons of efficiency and “to some extent to stimulate greater innovation”.
He adds: “There is a very strong tradition in the Netherlands of strong linkage between land use planning and transport.”
