Columnist Nick Richardson says: “The fundamental point which seems not to be understood by government at all is that all parts of the country need investment because they all contribute to the economy”. He makes the point that piling more investment into selected areas overheats them more and accentuates the contract with everywhere else. Richardson calls for spatial planning, which is a transparent process that sets a framework for investment. This would involve defining areas “where there should be investment for reasons of economic growth, population stability and environmental protection”.
