The Department for Transport has advised Network Rail to close railway lines during improvement projects. This will allow for faster completion than only carrying out maintenance work during evenings and school holidays. Secretary of State Patrick McLoughlin said: “Why do we insist on doing engineering works at night, over a very long period, rather than putting in place quicker, ambitious plans for re-construction with proper alternatives and information for passengers?” This announcement follows delays to the Great Western Main Line electrification project, currently running four years behind schedule.
