Britain's system is in the "second tier” of European railways according to the Boston Consulting Group, writes Transport Correspondent Graeme Paton. The BCG report put Britain in eighth place out of 25 countries studied; together with Denmark the country came top for safety, but only reached 16th place for quality of service. Switzerland was rated best overall, but other major networks such as those in France and Germany also scored better than Britain. - TS
