Whitehall chief to stem HS2 costs

Cabinet secretary Sir Jeremy Heywood is concerned that HS2’s expenditure will exceed its £56 billion budget. Potential cutbacks include reducing tunnel lengths in the Chilterns and paying less compensation to homes and businesses affected by HS2. Savings were made previously by cancelling proposed links to Heathrow and HS1 at London St Pancras.
