TfL pioneers jet grouting

Transport for London has released a video showing its use of jet grouting at Victoria station.

Jet grouting is a process by which grout is pumped into the ground to form columns of stabilised ground, allowing engineers to work on complex projects such as the Victoria station upgrade.

It was completed at Victoria in September 2014 by the station upgrade team, and was the first large-scale use of jet grouting for tunnel construction in the UK. The advanced works team completed the 2,157th and final column after working on the project for 34 months.

The grouting work was arried out from street level. The scheme involved excavating 3,000 cubic metres of ground by hand and working beneath the Grade 2 listed Victoria Palace Theatre.

Glenn Keelan, Victoria station upgrade programme manager, said: “This is the first time we’ve used jet grouting techniques on a London Underground estate.”
