TfL to accept Apple Pay contactless payment system

Transport for London is to accept Apple Pay as a contactless payment method across its network when it launches in the UK later this month.

The system will allow iPhones, Apple Watches or iPads to act as a means to pay fares that would otherwise be paid on Oyster or contactless payment cards.

TfL said that one in ten contactless transactions in the UK are made on its network, making TfL one of the largest contactless merchants worldwide. Over four million unique credit or debit cards have been used on TfL services so far, with more than 1.2 million contactless transactions made each day on TfL services – representing 17% of ‘pay as you go’ journeys.

Oyster will continue to be available, with contactless payments being another option allowing travel without the need to top-up Oyster credit.
