The Metropolitan Line was forced to close on July 17 because so many workers were self-isolating that insufficient control room staff remained to run the service. No services ran on the route between Aldgate and Amersham as staff had been contacted by NHS Test and Trace and ordered to stay at home.
It continued to run a reduced service on ‘freedom day’ on Monday July 19, when most COVID-19 restrictions in England were lifted. The Piccadilly, Central and District lines were also affected. TfL said that Tube passenger numbers had recovered to 40-45% of pre-pandemic levels.
Elsewhere, passengers were warned of service alterations on some Northern routes due to a number of frontline staff either testing positive for COVID-19 or having to self-isolate. Services between Leeds and Sheffield, and Leeds and York were especially affected.
