TransPennine Express’s 51-strong fleet of Class 185 diesel multiple units is to receive a technology upgrade to enable faults to be more easily discovered and rectified.
The three-car units, owned by Eversholt Rail and based at Ardwick (Manchester), are now around 15 years old and were refurbished in 2017-18.
Siemens Mobility, which constructed them at its plant in Krefeld (Germany), is installing cloud-based applications and real-time rail data to detect problems.
This will help TPE to better organise its scheduled maintenance and to keep an eye on regular issues such as door opening and battery performance.

Northern used to hire some other the Class 185 Desiro DMUs. If Transpennine Express decides not to keep the Class 185s. Then maybe they could be cascaded to South Western Railway and to replace the Class 158 and Class 159 and to be cascaded to Great Western Railway.
