Freightliner says trials with a new lower-emission fuel for its diesel fleet have been a success, raising its credentials as a supporter of reducing greenhouse gases.
It says it is the first rail operator to use Gd45, produced by Shell GTL and supplied by Green Biofuels. Almost half of it is hydrogenated vegetable oil.
Data collected from the testing shows significant emissions reductions without affecting performance, and that complete transfer to this brand would cut the company’s emissions by half.
Freightliner is currently using more diesels, following a decision to mothball most of its Class 90s to reduce energy costs.

Founded in 1995 and headquartered in London, Freightliner (a leading UK rail freight operator) has been extensively trialling the fuel on some of its services over recent months in partnership with GBF and Shell. Data collected from the testing shows significant emissions reductions in diesel engines of 84% methane, 14% NOx and 18% ultra fine particulates when compared to regular diesel locomotives. Besides, there was no performance impact or loss of horsepower. Almost a month ago, Freightliner announced that it would turn back to diesel-operated trains because electricity costs have gotten too expensive which was commented by industry experts as another small example of the wide-ranging effects of the global energy crisis.
