GB Railfreight has launched a new service for Brett Aggregates, operating from Newhaven collection terminal in East Sussex to Thorney Mill, West Drayton.
The first train to be run on January 19 consisted of 17 wagons that transported a total of 1,350 tonnes of aggregate destined for construction projects in south-east England.
GBRf Business Development Director Tim Hartley said the new service marked the freight operator’s continued expansion in the bulk market and demonstrated how transporting material by rail, which otherwise would have been taken by road, significantly reduces the environmental impact of important construction projects.

The pioneering UK freight operating company GB Railfreight [GBRf] and Brett Aggregates, independent building materials supplier, successfully started a recent aggregates service from Newhaven, East Sussex, to Thorney Mill, West Drayton, on Wednesday 19 January 2022 by using one of its powerful Class 66/7 diesel-electric locomotives. It was the first scheduled journey operated by GBRf from Brett Aggregates’ Newhaven collection terminal, which is capable of receiving 10000 tonnes cargo vessels. This fresh service marks GBRf’s continued expansion in the bulk market and brings opportunity to support Brett Aggregates by operating future expeditions from its collection terminals.
