EMR begins work on £35m Etches Park improvements

Work has commenced on a £35 million upgrade of East Midlands Railway’s Etches Park depot in Derby.

The project will be delivered in two phases, in preparation for the arrival of the operator’s new bi-mode Class 810 Aurora fleet from Hitachi.

Due to enter service on inter-city routes to St Pancras International from 2023, the new fleet and associated works are majority funded by rolling stock owning company Rock Rail.

Buckingham Group Contracting will deliver the first phase of the depot upgrade at a cost of £15m. This involves the reconfiguration of the current track layout at the site, plus the extension of the North Shed and installation of overhead line equipment so that the new fleet can be easily tested.

A new carriage wash system will also be built at the site, fuelling and servicing equipment upgraded, and the depot’s fuel road extended to accommodate up to two five-car units.

The second phase of the upgrade will then take place to construct new train cleaning areas, replacement offices and staff facilities at the site’s South Shed.
